Final Considerations of the Laboratory Class

The freshwater protozoa is hypertonic in relation to the external environment. So, it receives constant inflow of water by osmosis and, in order not to “explode”, it has pulsatile vacuoles - responsible for the elimination of excess water.

In freshwater, we can find the following protozoa, algae and molluscs:

- Amebas: freshwater protozoan

- Euplotes: freshwater protozoan

- Didinium: freshwater protozoan

- Paramécio: freshwater protozoan

- Rotifers: freshwater protozoa

- Nematode: freshwater protozoan

- Euglenas: freshwater protozoan

- Algae Chestnuts
- Green algae

- Layered seaweed

- Cotton Algae

- Filamentous algae

- Horn-shaped seaweed

- Brush-shaped algae

- Algae in the shape of dots

- Bearded algae

- Snails: freshwater mollusc

- Slugs: freshwater mollusc

- Snails: freshwater mollusc

However, the salty water protozoa rarely has pulsatile vacuoles, since it is isotonic in relation to the external environment. Therefore, it does not present problems in its osmotic regulation.

In salty water, it is possible to find the following living beings:

- Plankton: marine organism

- Bentos: marine organism

- Neon: marine organism

- Phytoplankton: marine microorganism

- Diatoms: marine microorganism

- Cyanophytes: marine microorganism

- Phytobenthos: marine microorganism

- Macroalgae: marine microorganism

- Marine herbs: marine microorganism

- Microfitobentos: marine microorganism

- Zooplankton: marine protozoan

- Marine Invertebrates: marine protozoan

- Oysters: marine molusc

- Mussels: marine molusc

- Nudibranchs: marine molusc

- Seafood: marine molusc

- Teredo Navalis: marine molusc

- Lula: marine molusc

- Sépias: marine molusc

- Octopus: marine molusc

This photo was taken from a video of a lecture that we watched when we arrived in the neighborhood. The video made us understand the revitalization project better. And, the talk, in general, brought the opportunity to meet some of the members of the "COM COM Project".

·        SECOND GROUP: visible environmental impacts in the Atlantic Forest biome, caused by the disordered occupation in the neighborhood Cota 200.

Picture 01: House wreckage; sign of irregular occupation. There, there was a precarious construction in an area of environmental protection and risk. The people who lived in it had to leave. So, the house was demolished and today, in the area of danger, we see wreckage like this.

Picture 02: Small shady wooden shack in the middle of the forest. In addition to being an extremely precarious infrastructure, this house is also being occupied irregularly in the Serra do Mar - generating dangers of collapsed.

Picture 03: Place where there was an irregular occupation. The house was demolished.

Picture 04: Place where there was an irregular occupation. On rainy days, water passed through the house; resulting in flooding and landslides. Thus, the demolition and removal of these people was necessary.

Picture 05: Stream located in one of the squares of Cota 200. It should serve as a means of supply for the residents, but, unfortunately, it is not useful. It is polluted. In it as we can see, there are several types of garbage, like CDs.

Picture 06: Wrecks of yarns and pieces of wood thrown in the middle of the forest. This does not just mean a hazard on rainy days. Or, an environmental impact. It also means the lack of care of some 200 Cota residents.

Report of the results of the laboratory analyzes of the collected samples - Post Study (2nd part)

You guys remember that, during our field work, we obtained pH measurements using samples collected in fresh water and salt water?

So today, in this post, we'll talk a little bit about them! For those who do not know, the acronym pH means hydrogen hydrogen potential and indicates the content of free hydronium ions per unit volume of the solution. The more hydronium in the medium, the more acidic the solution; That is, more basic will be.

Anyway, continuing ... In the laboratory of our school, we observed these water samples collected during the Study. Now you're ready to see the results of those reviews! Are you prepared?

  •         Sample 01: Freshwater source - Cota 200
In this sample, no type of microorganisms were found; which was already expected, because being a source, apparently uncontaminated, it is normal not to present protozoa and few algae.

  •         Sample 02: Saltwater - Santos
In this sample, no type of organism was found either. The absence of larger organisms, such as protozoa, is normal in seawater. If there is contamination, it is a consequence of bacteria. And, unfortunately, we can’t see these types of bacteria in the microscope we use.

Characteristics of the neighborhood's environmental revitalization projects! - Fieldwork (2nd part)

Now, in this post, we will talk about the good things!

The Cota 200, as we have told you, is undergoing a great process of transformation. Their homes are being properly painted. The houses are also receiving a proper structure, with electricity, sewage network and water box.

The floor of the neighborhood is being paved and the walls of the plazas receive artistic conceptions of mandalas.

The mandalas on the walls have strong shades. Orange, light green, light pink, purple, red, brown and blue are some of the main colors of the Cota 200 neighborhood.

Whoever promotes all this artistic painting is the nucleus of the Ateliê. This core also makes painting on the tires, which serve as seedbeds for seedlings. Undoubtedly, this nucleus promotes art and social inclusion!

Remember if. There are several development centers that give support to the Cota. In case, I wanted to know about one more, here, is one more of them: the "COM COM Project".

This project gives full support to community communication, dissemination and audiovisual registration; is a project that registers, transmits and publishes through the radio, television channel or social networks all the activities that are carried out in the neighborhood.

Cool, isn't it?

Explanation of blog background image!

Hey, you know what background you're seeing? Do you know why? We think not, right? So today, we will explain why we chose this image as blog background!

To begin with, we mean that the drawing is our own. We do it during a Geography class. The teacher asked us to make a background with warm and cold colors, representing the artistic conception of the Cota; This drawing could be done with a creative role or not, and when everything was ready, we should digitize it and post it on the blog for you!

Our idea at the beginning was to design a mandala with the main colors of the neighborhood Cota 200. But, we wanted something more. Thus, the idea arose, in the background of the mandala, to draw a wall of one of the houses of the revitalization project.
The wall we had as an inspiration was this one:

We use this wall as a base, because of its colors. In our opinion, they give life and joy. And to you?

With this, we began our art - always having as key, these colors: red, brown, light pink, orange, light green, wine and dark blue.

The end result was this:

Environmental impacts visible in the Atlantic Forest biome, caused by the disordered occupation in the neighborhood Cota 200

When we were walking along Cota 200, we could observe several landscapes. But unfortunately, we also saw negative things.

Around, there are wrecks on houses. On one hand, shows the result of the revitalization project, which is based on demolishing the houses in danger and transforming the Cota into a sustainable neighborhood. However, on the other hand, it also shows the lack of care. After all, if we are demolishing the houses, we will demolish right. Without leaving traces and traces. Thus, in the days of rains, we will not have dangers of these wrecks, in the middle of the Atlantic Forest, to cause irreversible damages.

In the neighborhood, the withdrawal of the woods and forest is visible. And when a type of damage occurs, the shacks built in the middle of the environmental preservation areas are threatened; People are not only at risk of floods, but also from landslides and loss of life.

Already, on the main stream of the Cota, which should serve for the population, of the neighborhood, if it supplies, does not have that function. It is polluted. In it, there are several types of wastes, such as CDs; the human being has the capacity to spoil privileges that nature offers him.

Emission of gases generated by the industries of Cubatão

In this post, we will talk a little about what we learned, in our Environmental Study, about Cubatão!
Remember that in the previous posts we told you that the Cota 200 neighborhood is located in the city of Cubatão? Good, then let's go!

When we were on top of Cota 200, we could observe, from a distance, the city of Cubatão and the emission of gases generated by its industries. But what is this? Calm down, we'll explain!

Years ago, in Cubatão, the emission of toxic chemical components, such as sulfate, carbon, benzene, sulfur oxides, nitrogen and hydrocarbons released, exceeded more than 1,000 tons per day. A lot, right? Black and yellow smoke was coming out of the chimneys, day and night. The smell of ammonia could be felt everywhere!

The air quality was pretty poor. It was hard to breathe. The Serra do Mar’s condition was to draw attention; There were many clear areas, many plants without leaves, due to acid rain.

These diverse causes made the city of Cubatão known globally as the most polluted city in the world. In the city were born children with severe malformations or died of anencephaly; was, in fact, the "Valley of Death".

The great challenge of Cubatão was summed up in a basic sanitation adapted to the conditions of a city that is, extremely, industrial. And when it comes to basic sanitation, it is not just proper sewage system. It is emission control of pollutants, filters of the industries, being constantly monitored. Also, a health system that specializes in dealing with people living under risk conditions; Exposed to pollutants.

Nowadays, we can say that Cubatão has overcome this great challenge. The city lost the title of most polluted city in the world. Technologies were used; Wires in the chimneys, gas scrubbers were installed. There was also substitution of energy matrix - the oil with high sulfur content was replaced by natural gas; all of which resulted in a decline in the numbers of people with respiratory and infant diseases, and also generated recognition of environmental recovery.

Residents of the city are seeking more efficient solutions to monitor and control the emission of polluting gases, thus avoiding the risk of scenes from the past repeating themselves. Already, the researchers, have adopted a laser system that evaluates the concentration of the compounds present in the atmosphere. The laser equipment also includes a telescope that can detect the radiation that interacts with the polluting gases, and can know in which direction they are spreading.

We cannot afford to spend on maintaining these technologies, because if we simply stop, we will compromise the sustainability of our world!

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONS

It is worth remembering that the danger to the local population is not yet totally eliminated. Constant supervision is required! Cubatão is not free of environmental accidents!

An example of this is the accident that occurred in the first week of this year, 2017! The fire on a conveyor belt of the Vale Fertilizantes Company caused an explosion of orange smoke. From this smoke, ammonium nitrate and sulfuric acid were released into the atmosphere - considered highly toxic.

CURIOSITIES

The city of Cubatão is known today as "cauldron" and "greenhouse". The Serra do Mar mountains cause the wind to carry pollutants in unexpected directions, and in winter, phenomena such as thermal inversion are common.

Temperature and pH measurements carried out at different points of the Field Work Study

As we have already told you, the Cota 200 neighborhood is located in the largest Atlantic Forest reserve in the country. And, not surprisingly, it is the largest biodiversity on the planet, where it is possible to observe a large number of fauna and flora and also the largest number of living beings per square meter. But, do you know why all this diversity is right in the Atlantic Forest and not elsewhere?

Good ... During our middle study, we realize that all this diversity in the Atlantic Forest is due, due to the climate and its location near the Serra do Mar; 2200 meters in relation to sea level; Higher altitude.

The temperature, rainfall frequency, altitude, proximity to the ocean and soil composition determine the vegetation variations that define the different ecosystems that make up the Atlantic Forest.

Some of the ecosystems in the Atlantic Forest are beach, rocks and mangrove. However, from the moment we approach the Cota 200 neighborhood, we enter the forest ecosystem.

In this neighborhood, due to humidity, the outside temperature was lower compared to the starting point, Notre Dame. This happened because when we have forest conditions, we have higher humidity rates.

Below you will see our notes on altitude, humidity, temperature and pH index, made at various points in the Middle Study.

Come to know about our Environmental Study!

Two days ago, we conducted our Environmental Study that we were talking about in previous posts. At the end of the visit to the Cota 200 neighborhood, people from the neighborhood made lunch for us. We also planted small plants like cacti, to take home ... Oh, it was incredible!

But, calm down! That, first of all, we will explain to you what we have learned. Now, you are ready to know every detail about the neighborhoods Cota and, especially, the Cota 200! Uhul!

The Cota neighborhoods are old communities, more than 60 years old, built in the midst of the forest, before there is concern for the preservation of vegetation. They have this name because they are embedded in the mountain range, each occupying a topographic dimension. It sounds crazy, right? However, it is not! Do you believe?

Before, there were several neighborhoods Quotas that were being occupied, such as 95, 400 and 500. But the people who were in them were forced to withdraw because of security concerns. These safety issues range from house slides because of rainfall to environmental preservation.

The people were brought to the neighborhood Cota 200 by the government, so they carry out the construction of Anchieta ... Anchieta is essential for the people who live there. And that does not mean that many people can´t move because of their family history. However, the change had to happen. After all, they were in dangerous and environmental preservation areas, were not they?

Cota 200 is not a sustainable neighborhood, it is not ecologically correct or economically viable. But it is located in a sustainable region, in the largest Atlantic Forest reserve in the country...

Today, in danger areas, instead of houses, we can see "flashes" of land in the middle of the forest and wreckage of shacks spread high in the occupations. The CDHU (State Housing and Urban Development Company), a state government company, wants to transform the Cota 200 neighborhood into a sustainable region.

The intention of the project is to implement, in the neighborhood, sustainability solutions. Sustainable construction, water reuse, materials recycling, improvement of appearance, such as mandalas paintings on the walls and application of sewage network and sustainable energies are some measures planned for Cota 200, a historical area of irregular occupation in the Serra do Mar.

The problems of disorderly urbanization and irregular occupations in Cota 200 - Pre study - A cota de um bairro

It is evident that everything is transformed by the action of man. Thus, it is impossible to have an inhabited world without suffering diverse changes. These changes mainly involve an accelerated process of transformation, which emerged during the Industrial Revolution and advances in technology.

Cities, today, are increasingly crowded together. This population growth is allied with the lack of a housing policy and not accompanied by planning. In unprepared cities, for example, it generates a great "swelling" of people. And all this is the result of precarious construction and intense urban poverty and land occupation, in areas, naturally, of risks to human habitation, which is aggravated, above all, by the constant withdrawal of forest.

The withdrawal of forest or forest threatens the presence of the population in precarious infrastructure (shantytown and slums) with risks of landslides and emergencies of diseases and epidemics caused by lack of hygiene and sanitary services; is the scenario of most underdeveloped countries, in urban areas, including Cota 200.

The neighborhood Cota 200, in Cubatão, presents the following problem: irregular occupations in an area of environmental preservation, the Atlantic Forest. These irregular occupations make people, on rainy days, lose their homes and even their lives with heavy flooding and landslides. Thus, the government had a license to remove people who were occupying area of risk and environmental preservation.

However, discussing this issue only on the side of "social deprivation" would disconnect reality, as well as ignoring irreversible damage to the environment and society.

For decades, this problem has not been properly addressed. Although Cota 200 is receiving support from all the local development centers of the Serra do Mar Recovery Program, problems related to quality of life and pollution of ecosystems still exist and persist.

What is the use of applying a revitalization project, with water reuse, materials recycling, appearance improvement, sewage plumbing and renewable energy application, if our government, with its license, removes people from the area of risk and destroys their houses, without promising, then, none in return? We believe, yes, in the struggle for preservation, but not on top of an absolute extinction of history.

Don´t you see that most of them were people who had a past and lived in the neighborhood 30/40 years ago? From there, they have nowhere to go. Just imagine you living in Cota since the construction of Anchieta and one day the government arrives and tells you the following sentence: "You will have to vacate your house." You, there, who are reading, would agree and simply leave, leaving everything that I built behind?

We, the group, do not! It is our history, our home, we have the right, ué ... So it was because of opinions like ours that we held meetings. Everything was done with a lot of caution, conscience and patience, so that the residents understood how important it was / they were to leave there; an area of environmental preservation.

This, in fact, is a very complicated matter, since to remove the people from their present permanence should be an intention to preserve the Atlantic Forest and to protect the lives of the people who are there. However, this kind of protection goes far beyond what we imagine. These people are in need of real protection. A kind of protection with which, instead, of removing her from the neighborhood and leaving them in much worse situations, living on the street with absolutely nothing, we must give shelter, home and protection.

In general, on this growth of disorderly urbanization that is not easily equated by the State, it demonstrates an urgent need to raise awareness of society as a whole, and especially of the public agencies responsible for managing and supervising the use of public money. After all, there is no way to know what the real damages and environmental impacts caused to the environment will be, and what is worse, there is no policy of social planning or action in evidence, seeking to make this risk of negative impact less tense.

Correcting mistakes made in the past by not planning is a difficult and long-term task, but it must be the first goal of the state, regardless of which party is in power. To this end, there is a need to integrate the economic and social dimensions in the creation of new strategies, and, as a main, better planning of cities; the quest for the best quality of life of all citizens can never be overlooked.

A video called "A cota de um bairro"

We are in the middle of preparing for our Environmental Study!

Then, in Geography class, we saw a video called "A cota de um bairro". After this video, the teacher explained about the disorderly occupation that Cota faces; precarious homes are built in an area of environmental preservation, the Atlantic Rainforest - and this, as a result, risks of landslides and floods.

Thus, the public bodies, thinking on the side of environmental preservation and sustainability, obtained a license to demolish these irregular homes, transferring people to another place. However, this does not always happen; None of the residents removed from the Cota neighborhoods receive their new homes for free.

Many people who are staying in Cota have a family history since the construction of Anchieta. And this means that most people do not have the conditions to move and build a house in another place ... When the government removes these people, they have nothing left. After all, what they invested throughout their lives was not returned to them.

Thus, the teacher proposed that we make a critical individual text about these problems of urbanization, also involving the lack of effective public policy. A collective text will emerge from this individual text. That is, we will join and create a single text about irregular occupations, at Cota 200.

We hope you enjoy!

We have news!

Guys, you will don´t believe it!

We have just received a statement from our school about the Environmental Study that we will do in this Second Quarter; it has everything to do with what we are approaching here on the blog. Look how nice it is!

The Study will be held on 23 May, on a Tuesday. Where are we going? Well, we will go to the Cota 200 neighborhood and to Santos.

The Cota 200 neighborhood is located in Cubatão, 200 meters from sea level, near the Anchieta Highway. This visit will result in a more in-depth study on sustainability. After all, there, they had several houses in places of environmental preservation and today, the government is trying to "finish" this disorderly urbanization, transforming the neighborhood into a sustainable region.

So, for you not to be out of nothing, we will observe and record the characteristics of the neighborhood's environmental revitalization projects, the emission of gases generated by the industries in the Cubatão region and the visible environmental impacts in the Atlantic Forest biome caused by the occupation Disorderly in the neighborhood.

We will also note the temperature measurements performed at different points in the Middle Study for a future climatological analysis of the region. The pH values of the collected water samples will be analyzed in the laboratory; we will produce a report with the result of the collected laboratory / climatological analyzes.

Thus, you will not only expand your knowledge, but also know the neighborhood virtually. We will shoot every detail....  Funny, right?!

Conclusion

Now, we are finishing our last post, and with this Blog, we realized the diverse points of sustainability, that many times are not present...
